Has anyone else been listening to this release? I recommend seeking this cd out - Zingg is a guitarist who has worked with Steely Dan, and various projects with Donald Fagen, as well as Boz Scaggs, Michael McDonald, and Rickie Lee Jones. Vinnie Colaiuta and Will Lee serve as the rhythm section for every cut. Some tracks are more adventurous than others, but obviously there is a high quality level of groove and tight playing throughout. Anytime that Colaiuta is on every track of any album is always a great plus.

this is hip. total west coast jazz sound so far, imo. Sounds like a Steely Dan album, which is good. I may buy this, sounds groovy.

That's on of the worst drum sounds I've heard in a long time.

I absolutely love Vinnie, but I have to agree that the drum sound leaves much to be desired. His playing is, of course, amazing and it very well could be the engineer and/or mix.

I really enjoy that album, not the greatest drum (tom) sound ever but it doesn't bother me at all, and yeah, very Steely Dan oriented indeed, thanks for the link Deseipel.

In regards to the outstanding performance on the track "The Black Dog", this intriguing occurrence was shared with me yesterday:

Having played with Drew for years, I knew that there is a side to his playing that he might not get to throw down on this cd – his very emotional and moody side...he can make it ‘cry and sing’ like few can.  So I asked him just to take a run at the solo with that in mind...just emotion...and explained the mood I was after when I wrote the tune.  All of Drew’s work on the record is stellar, but in my opinion, the solo on 'The Black Dog' is the most raw and purely emotional...just guts and no "theory".  When the guys were tracking it, they did one pass and then came into the control room for a listen – much like they did on each tune.  They’d sit down, make changes in a chart, discuss it briefly and then go back in to hit it.  After they listened to 'The Black Dog', Vinnie stayed in the room when the others had left.  He told me “Georgie, I’m not getting what you are after here...”...I said “Do you ever feel so dark, you want to just open a vein???”  He looked at me with a very flat expression for probably five full seconds and went in and tracked the take.  Vinnie gets it.  He asked me after the take if “That was it”...I just hugged the guy.
