Joel Taylor on Jeff Richman's Last Arrival

Joel Taylor does some pretty sick polyrhythmic stuff in this album, also some slick modulations, very Vinnie influenced stuff. I recommend.

When I worked at musicians institute I got to see these guys rehearse for this album. There was a producer guy in the room giving Jeff guidance. This album came out in 96. Joel does play some nice stuff. He has a loose feel. He's got that single pedal thing going. Super nice guy.

Definitely some nice playing from Joel on this one as well as 'Sand Dance'. I'm not thrilled about the sound quality on either one but again, I like what Joel does with the material.
Pete Riley did a lesson in 'Rhythm Magazine' some years ago that featured Joel's 3 over 4 stuff he does on 'Last Arrival'.

First heard Joel on Andy Summers' Peggy's Blue Skylight and Ive thought he was great ever since. Saw him in NYC at Birdland with Andy in '04 and he did not disapoint. He was reading parts/charts originally played by Vinnie on Andy's Earth And Sky record. 5 piece kit, a few cymbals and he smoked. Killer half-time rolling shuffles.

I saw Joel play with Frank Bambale and Ric Rierabracci at the spud when I first got to LA years ago. Was instantly blown away by Joel. Really handled Frank's wacky solo stuff very well (Frank was playing a double neck 6/6 with some bizzare tuning he "invented").
Seems like Joel has always been getting a lot of work, but has yet to (or has no desire) to "go big". Sometimes some of the best players are the most unknown ones even to musicians within that particular arena...
