Left side chinas?

I use a 20" Oriental Classic or standard trash on the left and love to just glance it, rarely hitting it hard, sometimes using it for offbeat eigths(LH) in a pattern(still left handing the snare) I learnt a lot from the way Vinnie doesn't just smack it, sometimes I go to a 19K or even a 14K, I have a 14 or 16 or 18 classic on the right above my 18 "to 20" or whatever crash so the left side china is definitely my wild card cymbal.....A lot of gigs I can't fit it in lately so it doesn't get out much.....but then my 27" Wuhan is getting lonely too....damn these small pub stages.

27" thats the size of must pub stages, just take a BD and that china and your set..... man thats huge but so awesome

You inspired me and I found a new 22" fx Oriental China Trash that's been sitting in a local store for a long time. It's a bit disharmonic but definitely no clunker. They had a 20" as well, the 22" is lower in pitch. I'm sometimes using 16" crashes on the far left side, it'll take some time to get used to a 22

I haven't used a china cymbal in years- but if I'm using one I'll usually have it setup on the left. It's just such a specific sound and can be easily become overbearing, plus I haven't really been in many situations that called for it. The last time I remember was when I was between stints in California and living back in Michigan for a few months. I was playing a musical called Urinetown, and there were a few tunes (for a few bars each) that required a "chinese" cymbal (for those that haven't played theater stuff the drumset books can be anything from real vague to very specific with sounds... actually most books for any instrument can be that way in this genre). Anyway, here's a picture of the rig I used for that show:



I had actually sold the china I had before this show and used a 20" Zildjian Pang from the 70's, but the MD didn't think that it had enough bite so I swung for a 20" Sabian HHX and that did the trick... haven't used it since!

I used to use two Chinese cymbals, one on each side (20" and 22"). I love that setup, but I just hate lugging around so much gear now.

Here's a shot from the mid 80s with my big Gretsch double bass kit with six toms. The left side china (20" Sabian here) is just behind my big hairy head.

We all have photos of ourselves from the '80s we'd rather forget. I know I do....

Nice drums, DSOP - must have been a blast to play. For a while in the early '80s I used 6 Roto-toms. Combination of the Bruford and Bozzio influences. The bass drum was a 22" clear Vistalite. Looked very nice under lights. Had the two chinas going at that time, too. That set was so much fun.

I love china cymbals. My dad used to play a Paiste 18" 2002 China Type that I loved whenever he hit it. He played with a guitarrist here in Brazil that demanded that he played the high intensity parts of the music with it.
Billy Cobham, Simon Phillips and Roger Taylor also are my influences to use a china cymbal. I got lots of ideas from Billy and Simon. I have now a Paiste 22" China Type on my right, I use it as a trashy ride and also to very loud accents, it's great. I want to get a left side china too, probably a 20", and I also want a smaller china to my right to play offbeats and fast accents - like Neil Peart used to do.
