Funny Odd...heard Vinnie at the Spud before I knew who Vinnie was
with some of the Joni Mitchell guys circa 1983 or so??? Believe It
was recommended by my drum teacher...I tried to play along and
hated it...I think I put a Cars LP on after to get some esteem,
then grew into it mainly because I loved Tony's snare sound.

Wow...you guys hit the fusion era way before me...I weaved through the pop
rock world long before this happened...saw Journey in HS and this guy named
Steve Smith did a solo that blew my mind...which led to this the following
week in a no-Youtube age (it took work to track this down)

Me and al my friends got hip to Vinnie after "Ten Summoners Tales." It was because of the odd-time thing, but to a guitar player cool drumming to me was when the snare wasn't always on just 2 & 4. He of course was on all the later Joni stuff, and I was a big Joni fan. They guy playing impossible shit with a cigarette hanging out of his mouth and his dramatic contribution to "St. Augustine in Hell."

When they did the "Document" it was great. Just back from th US studying undeer the slightly too academic Mr. Berlin. Got them all to sign my CD, but I was there to see Mike and that show completely changed my concept of good guitar tone.

I think I would have been a drummer before if it had been suggested and there was a way to deal with the noise. Noone ever got this music thing. They still don't.

Dire Straits: On Every Street

When I had my best drum teacher, I used to ride my bike back and forth over the course of 5-6 summers/winters
about 5 miles each way, to study with him, and I'd listen to this on my way, on Discman. The production is out of this world
and Manu and Jeff delivered some of the most tasteful drumming I ever came across.

The sound of his drums, the groove, the bass drum sticking it in there. The mix of the album is fantastic. The strange way Paice came in. This record sounds insanely good cranked loud.

And then I found this and my world was changed. I heard him taking angles at the other instruments, and an entirely different way of approaching drumming, he could almost see everything coming and adjust while contributing his own voice and spice. I was half listening to it, not intently, and could hear that extra layer of thought.
