Sound is certainly a factor... maybe...

But the kicker is, if sound was the primary reason. Why would anyone pigeon hole themselves into such a tiny selection of possible sounds?

If the greatest sound spectrum is not being tied down to any brand, being able to play everything you ever want. Then being specifically tied down to 1 brands series must be about the most constricting.


Now if you say - well so-and-so uses whatever they want in the studio, live, etc. Then it becomes most definitely not about sound, and purely marketing.


Sadly the drum industry is so immature with it's endorsements. Everyone of these C company welcomes Y person to the family promo's is pathetic. Like the "sound I heard in my head" changed every time their contracts were up. Do people really fall for this stuff? It's as bad as the .99 cent thing.

That photo from groober doesn't provide much context for what's going on - looks like a rehearsal that reminds me of something pianist Mark Isaacs told me. He said that he booked a one-day rehearsal with the band that recorded 'Resurgence' and that Vinnie Colaiuta requested a complete drumset be hired for him, including cymbals. All Vinnie had to do was to show up with his sticks and hey presto, they learned some great music that day which was recorded beautifully the next day with Vinnie using a vintage round badge Gretsch that he bought specifically for that session.

On a personal note, and I'm sure many members on here can relate, I often rehearse at various friends' houses and if they have drums and/or cymbals there that are functional, I'll happily use what I can of their stuff. We do what we can, right?

It was a bit silly of me to put up that photo. It is a fun shot though.
On a personal note ... I have Sabian, Zildjian, Ufip, Meinl and Bosphorus cymbals, each one selected because it sounds great.
When I once had access to an artist's room full of cymbals it was easier to stick with one brand. Paiste's consistency hit a sweet spot I think.
That movie sounds interesting ...

Paiste makes several lines of cymbals, each of which sound distinct from each other, and yet also work well together. I don't know of another cymbal manufacturer with as much variety. Vinnie's been using Giant Beats, 2002s as well as Signatures, Traditionals and 602s.

I'm not going to lie- I have always had an interest in Paistes, despite the love of my Sabians. At Lama they'd have a set for Joe to play on- Traditionals I believe. That being said, it's hard to find enough of them in a store to get a grasp on the sounds they offer.

Also- that video is AWESOME. Keltner is THE man.

Keltner is a-m-a-z-i-n-g on that clip. Lovely group.

Guys like him could play on trash can lids and make music sound good. It's all about imagination. The rest is just marketing BS.
