I almost forgot that Bob Moses offers a wonderful break down of that style in his book 'Drum Wisdom'. He calls it a non-independent style in that the limbs do not perform the normal coordinated independence as in the more traditional method. Check it out.

It's not that hard if you have GREAT 16TH NOTE BASED MUSIC to play with. Alot of what is going on is based on the arrangements. Try playing a triplet rate with a songs like these and see how shitty you sound. Broken up between the limbs time.
