Without comparing her to Vinnie:
This is a step BACK in the band.
(Put the "I think that..." at the beginning of my post)

Sure Jeff Beck says that this is a step in OTHER DIRECTION in the band....Yes, backwards.

Showtime.

You guys are rough, wow. I don't care for the sound quality of the clip at all. i have decent speakers and it still didn't do the clip justice. OR the cymbals really do sound that bad. I would reserve judgement for when I hear them in person; if I ever do. But it doesn't make me want to go buy them. And it's not the drumming either, she's great.

A step backwards could be the right direction to go, especially if you've hit a wall. It wouldn't surprise me if a small part of him simply wants the shows to be about him and his music, not how crazy it could sound with VC or some other drummer.

Maybe.
I didn´t make my judgement based on the sound of the drums or cymbals, or if the drummer is man or woman.
It´s easier: Do a blind test and evaluate.
But, I repeat, this is my opinion.

You all need to search Jerohn Garnett on You Tube playing the same brand of cymbals and drums. Night and day. I dont think Soultone is for rock, nor are the drums. Those RnB/Gospel Chops guys sound amazing on those instruments.
Maybe Jeff wants the focus to be more on him than the band, but if the band sounds great behind him, I would think it would give him more freedom to do his Beck-isms without worrying about the backbone of the song. I am neither world renowned or in the position to pick from the pool of the world's top players so my thinking may be skewered, but it seems logical to me.

Horrible drum AND cymbal sounds. Just horrible, and you can hear the awful processing they used too.

Her playing is great - for a girl. It's average for a guy. Below average in the professional realm imo, which makes the Beck gig seem a bit odd/surprise.

It's unfortunate in a male dominated industry, but that's the way it goes... also gotta keep in mind particularly with music, skill is far below "who you know" in the requirements to land big gigs, endorsements, etc

With Beck, nobody can say there isn't a marketing angle in play having a (decent looking) girl drummer.

Like someone above said, listen to them blind and it becomes very blah

Beck's not a jazz/fusion guy. He's a rock guy who dabbles in other arenas because he can. The way most of us think here is probably counter-intuitive to what he was looking for. I'm not going to sit her and judge this girl based on the fact she's not Vinnie or Simon or any of other Beck's previous drummers. I have no idea what kind of music he's setting out to do. If it's new and different and challenging to him ... *shrug* what more can you ask from an artist of his caliber?
