I thought the tempo was spot on. That groove is slinky slow.
Remember Edie McClurg on the morning show?
I barely remember that show! I can see a bit of it in my mind, but not much else.

it was just a small informal funky get together, not some huge loud shiny stupid uptight show. I guess that's the way he had to go.

I don't think Dennis was holding back anymore than usual. The tempo was fine for my ears. I think its just that Dennis always has a "oh yeah, whatta you got? " look on his face. And it suits him well. He played for himself and thats all that matters imo. The song was fine for TV, it was a drum solo song = perfect.

First, I doubt DC was holding back. When he's doing one of his masterpiece solos he's already played for awhile, playing music where he's been stretching his brain. Creatively, I don't see you can get there in this kind of setting. You don't have 128 bars to build something and work it, which I think is Chambers' specialty. There wasn't any time to get to edge where he likes to live. It was 3-2-1, better be ready to smoke it on the downbeat. I imagine it being a very emotionally flat moment, lest you let the adrenaline claim basic brain function.

I liked the song choice, I liked his feel. That song is so hard to recapture the swunky magic. That space between sixteenths and triplets ... I thought DC nailed it.

Where was Gadd?

Isn't he the obvious choice?
I think Gadd was Jordan's primary go-to guy when he needed someone to sit in back when Letterman first launched, so they might've been going for some new blood with the lineup. Besides, I'm pretty sure he's on tour with Clapton right now.

Mark Guiliana
Zach Danziger
Cliff Almond
Ari Hoenig
Tommy Igoe
Dave DiCenso
Keith Carlock
JoJo Mayer
Chris Dave
Chris Coleman
Ian Froman

Of course Vinnie, but I would put money on the fact he would never do something like this.

I would rather see Letterman's show cancelled and replaced by David Sanborn's show "Night Music", or something similar.

Leno's show is almost unwatchable for anyone with an IQ over 50. It's aim is quite low.

I have no idea what kind of guy Letterman is -- he might very well be not a nice guy as reported. It wouldn't surprise me. And it's not as if his show is fantastic. But watching Jay Leno's show is torture.
