Letterman used to be kind of an anti-TV show. He couldn't get the big guests because he was in NY, so he went the opposite direction by making a show of the weird public. It was something that didn't work as well in the earlier time slot, so they made him more vanilla, like The Tonight Show. "Stupid Human Tricks" was funny to an educated at midnight, but not so much to the masses in the earlier slot.

Leno has a massive staff of writers, but they go for the corniest of corny jokes. There's a definite lowbrow/working man appeal to it. He gets the ratings because he's in LA and gets the stars. They've also reengineered the show so they have more country acts on there, something they shied away from in the past.

Personally I like the Letterman show, I find him more insightful than Leno. I like the fact that they don't take themselves quite seriously, I watch it quite often.

Personally I like them according to the order they appeared. Its drum SOLO week. Its the time when a drummer can come out and melt the varnish off the stage. I was disappointed in Dennis. Yes yes yes Dennis can groove and he's a musician blah blah blah. But come on, are there many faster drummers on the planet? He comes out with six toms and barrage of cymbals and barely touched any of them. Even the crowd 5 feet from him was unsure if they should applaud at the time. I really do not care for the pretentious attitude of " oh he's a musician he doesnt have to play alot of notes". I understand that in a concert setting. But this, again was drum solo week. One of my favorite records that Buddy played on was Louis and Ella. Ray Brown on bass. Buddy plays brushes almost the whole time. But if I was to go back in time to see him play, I want power and aggression at least once! To me, Tony was the flash guy, Gavin was the brain matter guy, Stewart was the on-top playing/ HUGE name(to the public anyway) and Dennis should of been ferocious. Admit it, ALL of you were expecting a very different Dennis on that stage. If that song was one of say 15 at a club or in concert, it would've been fantastic. But as the only selection by him, it was a let down.

I can't believe the criticism of Dennis. I got heat for saying Royster's performance was weird, and Dennis' performance was light years ahead. In fact Royster and the rest of the gospel chops contingency wouldn't have anyone to copy if it wasn't for Dennis Chambers. I LOVED that performance. His groove was not shaky, it was actually the band that was playing out of the pocket. He did rush during the 32nd note riffing, but who cares? Dennis is getting older and very comfortable earning thousands of dollars per week with Santana. You can't expect him to always play like the Dennis of the late 80s. All in all, my favorite was Gavin. I thought his song choice was a bit cheesy, the chicken isn't played at jam sessions anymore because it's so over done, but his pocket and solo were just perfect IMO.
