Funny, when I saw it I thought - aren't there a few as it is?

How about a documentary on Jeff maybe? (is there one already?)
Paul Marangoni wrote:I don't think it's fair to call Buddy Rich an ass-hole. I'm sure that for every story about how mean he was there are several more that show he had a heart of gold. He may have been a tough band leader, and strict task master, but unless you know someone, you can't judge them.
You know there are recordings of his rants right?

I think what Paul is saying is fair. I think at this point I feel comfortable saying he behaved like an ass-hole at times which still is a deal-breaker for my interest in learning about him as a person. As opposed to to saying HE IS an ass hole.

Perhaps so, but there are plenty of the best at their instrument, including drummers, who are incredibly personable and nice without recordings of them berating fellow band mates.

Being a dick to people is not a requirement for being a great drummer. Therefore, he was a dick outside of being great. Thus he was a dick as a person, not a musician. Being a great drummer does not negate the being a dick part.

Does anyone think you would get far in today's world acting like that no matter how good you are?

Of course man... There´s plenty of arrogant (douches?) artists. Talent overcomes a lot...

Who? Name a modern day band leader who is known for berating those under him

I think you are confusing talent with money and artists for pop stars.

I think it’s worth considering that Buddy grew up in a very different time.

It may be shocking to hear nowadays, but that’s the old school way of motivating.

Yelling, cursing and screaming.

I’m sure most of them blew it off and thought, “he’s pissed, we better play better” and that was that.

Still, it couldn’t have been much fun to be the focus of the tirades.

If there was a BUS AUDIO RECORDING from every band, maybe this wouldn´t be the winner in the "yelling/insulting" field.

Those who have spent some time on the road have probabl encountered or observed many worse things like this. Now, Iæve pretty much been the observer, but when it comes to annoyance from dealing with young players who think they're the shit and behave unerealiably ans lazy because they think that's cool, that's something I can relate to, and I sense a bit of that going on here.

Buddy being one of the best ever and such an explosive, type-A personality makes for *fantastic* documentary material. There are ways in which the two traits were certainly related. There are plenty of great people who are successful. But frequently, folks considered to be "the best" at whatever have a not so stellar interpersonal record.

Saying you're interested in hearing the story and supporting the project does not, IMO, mean you condone that sort of behavior.
