Virgil works a lot, and on his own terms, and I respect the heck out of that...

Virgil is at such level of drumming, he doesn't really need any people to hire him, he hires people to plays his music, he's an artist on his own.

I sort of agree with the DW drum sound commments, however there is a notable exception for me, which is the Michael Landau - Live 2000 album with Toss Panos on it. May be many factors that contribute to the sound, not the least of which is Toss and how it was recorded, but it's obviously possible
to make them sound good.

I get that DW is the place for countless wood options and variations. I just need one that sounds good and cuts through with nice character. As a guitarplayer I found that in a nice strat and as a drummer I know I will find that in Gretsch, but that's just personal taste. I dig a lot of drum sounds e.g. from Eric Harlan(who just sounds nice probably on anything) on Yamaha (more than on Sakae) and Matt Chamberlain with Craviottos, Jojo and Benny with Sonor, Paolo on Ayotte and so on...... they all have recognisable character that I can appreciate.

Still, it's mostly in the player, heads and tuning. I have played many a Yamaha kit that I like. Better than my cheapo Gretsch kit with edge issues in many ways, but konw that an optimized US Custom is my Thing and so it is with other players with different tastes than mine.

Like, I will always dig Simon's Tama sound, on all those records I grew up listening to, but at the same time, it will never be my own type of thing. That I feel will always be connected to Vinnie's main Gretsch period that got me into this instrument just as Landau post 2000 helped me find the guitar tone I was looking for.

Toss' DW's did sound nice. Kofi Baker's kit on Mojo w/ Brett Garsed and Rick Fierbracci sound pretty sweet too (thatsa good record)

Virg doesn't really do all the stick stuff any more but he is sure capable.....seems like Marco got that shit from Virg

on a side note I recently picked up Virgil's double bass drum book and am quite enjoying dipping into it here and there. I've never really like Virgil's drum sound, it's always very flat and dead sounding. Simon Phillips' drums on the other hand always sounds amazing

He´s crazy good... I think that´s the best sounding DW of all the samples posted before...

Ghilardi' and his DW kit.

Very dynamic and fluid.
6 is wonderful to play and
mutate. The keyboard
sample was driving me
mad but hats off to all for
a stimulating video.

PS: We have to remember
that Virg plays with these
baseball-bat Vater Assaults
and they will kill/murder
almost any standard sized
drum imo. I guess that is
why they are called Assault.
