I'm interrupting the flow of Steve Smith discourse in favor of some Pierre Van Der Linden!!!
The privilege of a senior member!

Drums sound like shit as far as I'm concerned.

snare sounded good...definitely NOT the Bonham sound w/the black dots...tuned way up.
the ride cymbal was a shock for a jazz pattern at high speed...that was my real
distaste.

I think DSOP should start the "Why I hate S.S." thread.

I don't mean to sound like I hate Steve. I love the guy. I used to be his biggest fan. I'm just heartbroken at what I'm hearing lately.

Listen to "Players" or "Edge of Insanity" and then listen to his latest release
and tell me that's the same drummer.

That Players album is simply great. All four guys played their asses off. Steve is in rare form. People kept asking for another Players album. Too late now.

And this is me doing my best Steve Smith impression at the time:

wow... great playing, DSOP.....

Ya know, I wonder if Steve's playing would be very close to where it is today, had he taken the Freddie Hubbard gig, instead of detouring through Montrose & Journey.
I also miss the style from Players, Vital Info Orion/Global Beat/Fiafiaga periods.

Thanks!

I think Steve's playing would definitely be close to where it is today if he had taken the jazz route vs the rock route. However, he wouldn't have made anywhere near the same amount of money, and probably wouldn't have been able to create his own fusion band and release all those records in the 80s/90s.

I miss the Vital Information of old too, especially when they had Dave Wilczewski,Tim Landers and Dean Brown. And Steve Smith's drum sound on those first two VI records is still unsurpassed.
