Compliance to what? Or more importantly... who?
And why should those particular entities define the rules?

To copyright law. Dude you are really.... oh never mind.... it's really pointless trying to explain anything to you.

This is true and I fully agree with that but what people are worked up about is I think not that they'll have to spend an additional $ for a genuine copy of Windows 7 but that stuff like ACTA goes beyond mere software and music being obtained illegally and contains clauses violating basic human rights. Fine, charge me for music and programs but who the f*** cares if I post a tweet with someone's photo or upload a YT video with copyrighted music in the background, as long as the author is credited and I'm not doing that for profit. I don't know how much more proof do people finally need to start doubting Governmental benevolence...
As you said DSOP we have legislation regulating violating copyrights so why do we need ACTA / SOPA ? To me one of the biggest reasons is that large institutions (because "corporation" is a no-no word) holding copyrighted intellectual property which they distribute refuse to innovate to challenge emerging trends in customer behavior, unlike small enterprises which don't have an established position are trying to do to make is big. Only 10% of profit is made from record sales of an artist, whereas the remaining 90% is ticket sales. But still they're trying to make you buy that CD. We have TV on demand which has been growing in popularity, and even YT have started their Movie service, but still they're pushing you into buying that DVD for 20$ rather than watching an online version of it for 7$. They just prefer to OPENLY pay off people who have been democratically chosen by YOU to support legislation that without much effort will help them put YOU to jail on very obscure grounds.

If you've ever tried to get a website to stop distributing your music without your authorization or permission, you would know why. I'm not saying SOPA is perfect, but it's a start. Too many people have gotten away with theft for TOO LONG!
And if you really think that it would end up with you serving jail time just because you posted a photo of someone, you're falling for the scare tactics of the BIG companies that currently make lots of money from letting people distribute unauthorized content.

Current laws are MORE than enough. Enforcement is the problem. SOPA is killing a fly with a hand-grenade. . . overkill, ya know.
The owners of megaupload, a site with lots of legit users and uses, were arrested oversees, the site was shuttered and much of their assets confiscated - all without SOPA.
Some are just falling for the scare tactics of the big companies who support SOPA.

Do you know how much trouble everyone had to go through to shut down that site? Ridiculous. That site was 100% bullshit pirates and thieves, and it took the coordinated effort of numerous agencies from numerous countries to shut them down.
