They still seem to me to be low volume cymbals, with a defined upper limit, but they sound superb, and deliciously chocolatey with a hint of cinnamon and perhaps some clove or a subtle whiff of nutmeg.
My 2002s are more nutmeggy, in fact.

Lovely !
And I'm liking Ludwig a bit more than the sound he got from those Gretsch drums.
I still prefer to have a mix of Bosphorus, Zildjian, Sabian etc but understand that at that level you have to have consistancy throughout a brand so that when traveling or in the studio you can dial up and replace whatever you're used to.

Well.
For a lifelong Paiste avoider, I have to say that ride cymbal sounds just perfect to my ear. The splashes are great, too...but the ride is a standout for me -enough to make me think again about my loyalty to Zildjian ride cymbals: I've been though a few looking for 'that' sound, and I think I just heard it. The drums sound amazing too -especially he snare drum -again just perfick for my ear. Overall -what a treat at the end of a long working day...10 (high quality) minutes of Vinnie playing stuff I can understand.
Wonder if he endorses Band Aids?

I love the ride and I'm getting one of those snares soon because of Vinnie. The china is a very different animal from his Zs. Much softer and easier to use quite a lot. Everything works well together. Still not a fan of the kit though and I don't really get those splashes, I'll still take my A customs over that any day.

The ride and crashes sound very good. Not a fan of the splashes and hats. He sure seems happy with these cymbals.

I'm trying not to be a bias fanboy- but damn, all that stuff sounds GREAT.
The drums sound great- a bit different from the Gretsch kits, but I'm digging it. I agree on the snare sound, too. Fantastic.
The cymbals sound quite decadent. Far superior to the A Customs, in my opinion.

I always got my Paistes at Massmusic, both for price and because none of the local shops carry any kind of selection. The 22" 602 is currently going for $420.00, much less than anything above:

Regarding the sound of the drums,
I noticed that only the snare seemed to be miced up, and yeah, the snare sounded great. The sound of the toms seems to be coming solely from the overheads, which are, of course, honed in to frequencies that will flatter the cymbal sound. I like the drum sound, I'd love to have heard it all close miced and mixed.
Vinnie is just as beautiful as ever. THE IDEAS! WHERE DOES HE GET HIS IDEAS!
