Steve Smith Back in Journey

This is really good...especially the grip talk pertaining to his history...why
he still positions his snare to a trad grip angle playing matched after an injury
and the concept of "flow" (although not directly stated that way) regarding muscle
memory and over practicing, the wisdom of slow practice, preserving fast energy
movements to a small percentage of your practice, etc.

Good int above...Steve really has either grown a lot in his style of communicating or just was very quiet
early on...this is a totally different guy than the one I would meet at NAMM or elsewhere.

Old Smitty...this is just monster power drumming from a guy who not really a rock drummer...even in 83 this was so sophisticated from a guy who played in a rock band if you didnt know his story. around this time a friend of mine was at PIT and when steve came by, he said, "Big deal, the drummer from Journey...a rock drummer" then he said everyone's jaw dropped after the first few minutes! they must have saw something like this...this set-up was SO pre-Freddy...I mean radically so!

Ha ! I saw Steve's Band in Boston around this time (circa 1989-90). Steve was on fire during this time with a Weckl set-up (left hand floor tom) with Vinnie's power.

BTW; Jan Hammer is way underrated as a pianist. Check out his debut ( Malma Maliny ) acoustic jazz recording live with the great George Mraz on bass. He was 20 yrs old.

When the Warsaw Pact invaded Czechoslovakia on 20 August 1968, Hammer's studies at the Academy were cut short. Hammer recorded a jazz trio live album at "The Domicile" in Munich on 30 August 1968. This was released as Maliny Maliny by the German label MPS Records. But Hammer moved to the United States and resolved to become a citizen after receiving a scholarship at Berklee College of Music in Boston.
