You're quite welcome Clint. You know, I've been very curious about the Birch Custom Absolute drums. They sound incredible in the video clips I've seen from Memphis Drum Shop. How do you like the bass drum?

I put a clear ambassador on the batter side (stock Yamaha on the reso) today but with nothing inside. I got one of those Gary Chaffee mufflers for Christmas so I'm still experimenting with it. I'm not sure how it would work with a heavy muffling. It might be too quiet as it's a fairly controlled sound, wide open. When I got it, it had an Evans EMAD with nothing inside and I didn't care for the sound.
It's strange, I've never played a wide open bass drum with an unported front head before but I fell in love instantly with the feel. I still have a lot of experimentation to do with it to get a usable sound but I think I can get it where I want it.

How does the Birch Custom Absolute bass drum compare to the Maple Custom Absolute bass drum? My old Maple Custom Absolute set was great, but the bass drum was only 'average' as far as real ooomph and low end.

Also, what size is your bass drum?

I love my BCAs. I swear by them. Easy to tune and they sound killer with clear single plys all the way to coated double ply and everything in between. My 22x16 kick will only go so low, but the good thing about the quickness and tightness of the sound is throwing a D6 in hole in the front thru a slammin PA is awesome. The maples have a touch more low end and might be a tad louder, but I get nothing but compliments on my BCAs from players and listeners alike.

I'm not sure how the two would compare as I've never played a MCA. My bass drum is a 22x16 and it obviously doesn't have the low end compared to my maple DW 22x18 bass drum but is still not bad. I still have a lot of playing around with it.

Given the same size and heads, a birch drum will have a lower end punch, quicker sound/less sustain and a bit more high end slap.

Yes, in theory, but I had a set of Recording Customs years ago and the bass drums NEVER sounded great. Good, but not great. The videos I see online of the new Birch Custom Absolute sound way different from the old Recording Custom (the toms especially). Could be due to different lugs, different edges, different mounts, and whatever else, but I think I like them a lot.
