Anyone going to see Dennis with Gary Grainger tonight?
Bringing drummers together since 1999

I meant my statement to read like this; "I wasn't expecting Dennis to be as good as he was". In other words, Dennis is a drum god, this I know, and he took it beyond my expectations.Rodge wrote:You were not expecting that Dennis was that good ? Where are you from Isaac ?
In France we say that Dennis is part of the holy trinity, Vinnie, Dave and him.
I saw Dennis with the Graffiti band long ago, around 1993. That show is one of my two "my-jaw-never-left-the-floor" drumming experiences. The other was Tony Williams in 1978 with a trio at the Keystone Korner in S.F. So, when I saw them, Dennis and company were playing at Kimball's East, a high-end, really nice club that held maybe 800 or 1000 people. Gone now. Saw McCoy Tyner and a bunch of other great shows there. Larry Coryell killed. Billy Cobham was wonderful. So, anyway. The entire S.F. Bay drumming community knew that Dennis was playing that night at Kimball's East, and they all showed up. The place was packed. Everyone and his brother played drums. And Dennis was incredible. He kicked everyone's ass. You have perhaps no clue how overwhelming Dennis could be at that time. Hall full of drummers. Gasps of astonishment, crazy cackling of disbelief. Somebody needed to be escorted from the hall to recover. Every single tune. I shit you not. I was just like that.Rodge wrote:You were not expecting that Dennis was that good ? I remember the John Scofield stuff and I took for granted that's Dennis' bag as a live drummer. I loved it, but there's definitely another level for him that he reserves for moments like intimate shows at the Tater, and it's breathtaking. I totally get why Isaac would be caught off guard. You think he's pushing his boundaries then he pushes some more.Rodge wrote:You were not expecting that Dennis was that good ? Where are you from Isaac ?
