I was backstage once a Cheap Trick show in the 90s. The guitar tech was being yelled at by Rick. Other than that, it was a good time. Sounds like the good times are over.

Ouch...sorry to hear that. Funny, for some reason I had been thinking about Cheap Trick lately--"Dream Police" is a GREAT rock tune.

Yeah man, Dream Police is one of the greatest pop-rock tunes of all time! A true masterpiece form any viewpoint.

It's hard to play simple and feel good. It's hard to not embellish AT ALL after 4 bars (Hi Weckl) . That's what makes JR and Gadd so great. Don't play drummy stuff. Just play a simple groove for THIS kind of song.
Truth is I understand this struggle pretty clearly. Constantly subdividing in my head and hearing all the phrases to a slow pulse. NOT playing them after spending years developing the ability TO play them is challenging. And all Virgil does mostly is constant gigs where he has total freedom to blow. TheN something like comes up and he's a fish out of water almost. He's playing so much stuff there, it's almost funny.
My respect for him would 1000x if he did his best Jeff here. Oh well.

link this thread with the latest VD talk...and segue to the great Bun E Carlos! Dream Police is a clinic on playing groove and time in the studio (FEEL). Like steroids in baseball today, looking back at the good ol days, this was the no Pro Tools era of really being able to lay down a track...sure there was editing and loops to a degree, but you had to have the goods. We can agree that Led Zeppelin ripped off many of their hit songs, but they did the performances. How you get there? it is the performance that counts (I did lose a lot of led Zep mojo however as I researched them and the blatant theft of songs...Jimmy Page is very human after all).
