Friday Night at the Cadillac Club - Dennis
My band The Energy Trio is resurrecting this and I want to rework the part I play to be more ballsy... I was playing it more like a version I heard with Joey D on it... Basically like a jazz blues, very little kick drum.
During rehearsal I realized it's hard to put a whole bunch of kick over it, especially basic shuffle patterns, because the tempo is wild and there's hits all over the joint. I know Dennis brings the snare for the hits a lot and is sporadically playing the kick, but I'm not really hearing it that well.
Anyone got any ideas on what would make the part smoke?

Sounds like Dennis is doing "four on the floor". I'm not sure if I'd do that. It's almost like jump swing or Rock a billy...

Great tune! I played it a lot with a band. After trying different things, I found that nothing grooved better than what Peter Erskine played on Berg's Short Stories album. Straight ahead 4 on the floor shuffle throughout:

Bob passed away too young. He was one of the few tenors I liked (along with Brecker and Coltrane...who passed away too young too).

I was leaning towards the 4 on the floor thing, or playing the kick on all the ta's.

Dennis on my iMac is heavily emphasizing 2 and 4, so the kick and snare are dancing around. It's the ride pattern that is the main action, everything else falls into play. It's more a hybrid swingy jazz beat. You could play a half time new jack swing beat to it too. It really depends on what your bassist is doing.
