Re: cheap drums with a great sound
I've been using a Gretsch Catalina Birch kit for several years now, and with great heads and the right tuning, the thing sounds awesome. It treats me well gig after gig, and I have absolutely no complaints about it.

I've been saving my Quaker Oats Instant Cereal boxes.
After saving the best sounding 5 boxes, I slapped a cheap BD pedal on the family size box, added some cheap 1950 snares on one of the boxes,
used some Turkish Amedia cymbals and have been gigging with this
set for the past 18 months.
Used this set for some touring in Europe and Japan
and they held up rather well, even when the two year olders came out and started banging.

Understood. But it would be even worse if you were endorsing stuff you didn't love. N'est pas?

Sure thing. Actually, the folks at Yamaha Spain (don't know about worldwide) are kinda flexible in terms of using some pieces of equipment like pedals, snare drums or some piece of hardware they don't make.
Of course some aspects come into play when doing this kind of deal. Like logistics and support, sometimes you need a rental kit or some specific piece of equipment and it's cool to have those folks to back you up. But I'd rather pay for all my gear than use, say, Mapex drums for free (Black Panther snares are great, though).
