Vinnie on Brand New Day

Postby JohnDrum » Thu Oct 20, 2011 8:05 am

all this talk of Vinnie with Sting has made me revisit Mr Sumner's back catalogue, and one of the albums I've been listening to is 2000's Brand New Day. I know Vinnie and Manu shared the drum stool, but I can't work out who did what track.

Now, I know for a fact that HOD forum member 'baht habit' once posted this eaxct information somewhere...probably on a Sting forum, but i can't find it anywhere...

I looked at the liner notes and it doesn't list who plays on what track - my guess would be Fill Her Up (definitely Vinnie), Ghost Story, Brand New Day.

A Thousand Years - Katche
Desert Rose - Katche / Mino Cinelu on percussion / Ettamri Mustapha on darbuka
Big Lie, Small World consists entirely of programmed drums
After The Rain Has Fallen - Colaiuta / Ettamri Mustapha on darbuka
Perfect Love...Gone Wrong consists entirely of programmed drums
Tomorrow We'll See - Mino Cinelu on percussion
Fill Her Up - Katche (the first half) / Colaiuta (the second half)
Ghost Story - Katche / Mino Cinelu on percussion
Brand New Day - Colaiuta

Fill Her Up was initially written and recorded entirely in 7, with no country elements at all. When the song was later overhauled, Vinnie's drumming from that early take was then isolated and rearranged in order to propel the second half of the version which appears on the album.
Vinnie also contributed some magnificent drumming to the full length version of The End Of The Game, but only a 'Prelude' was made available on the album. :?:

See?...I knew he had the full listing...thanks baht habit...
I remember thinking at the time of its release what complete sacrilege it was to let Kipper loose on the drum programmes, especially when Sting has such great drummers to choose from.

Now...do you have the same info for 2003's Sacred LOve?
I know Vinnie did a lot of the promo shows.....

Wow - Ghost Story surprises me a bit - I saw a show on this tour with Manu and this song didn't have the same groove happening at all - With the placement of the groove, I thought it was Vinnie. ;) Nice work from Manu here.

Would love to hear the full version of The End of the Game.

I think, although I may well be mistaken (my recently-turned-60 brain is weary, especially on a Friday afternoon), it was on the Brand New Day Single release-remember singles?

I nearly said B side

End Of The Game:

I attempted to find the original version of Fill Her Up on the internet, so that you guys who haven't heard it could now hear the major difference. But I haven't been successful as of yet.

As to how I learned that Vinnie definitely played drums on After The Rain Has Fallen and the title track Brand New Day - and that Manu played on Thousand Years and Desert Rose - my source is the "Brand New Day Remixes" cd which was released in September of 2000. Unlike the Brand New Day cd, this remix collection actually includes detailed credits for who played what on the original tracks and who then contributed additional parts. That cd was also how I learned that the drums for Perfect Love...Gone Wrong were completely programmed.
While listening to BND, I had assumed that After The Rain Has Fallen was Manu. So I was very surprised that it was actually Vinnie. And this then confused me even more since Manu had claimed in an interview that he worked on 4 tracks for Brand New Day, with one of them including drumming from both he and Vinnie.
And I was under the impression that Vinnie was on Ghost Story for the exact same reason cited above - that Manu played very reserved on the live version contained on the live performance from the dvd. And that got cleared up by Mark Eldridge in 2003. According to him, Vinnie was only involved during the earliest sessions with Dominic Miller on guitars and Don Blackman on keyboards. The drums on Ghost Story were recorded during a later set of sessions with contributions from Miller, keyboardist Jason Rebello, Manu and Mino.

Drums on Sacred Love:
Inside - Colaiuta
Send Your Love - Katche
Whenever I Say Your Name - Katche
Dead Man's Rope - Colaiuta
Never Coming Home - entirely programmed drums
Stolen Car - entirely programmed drums
Forget About The Future - Katche
This War - Katche
The Book Of My Life - Katche
Sacred Love - Katche

Bonus track: Like A Beautiful Smile - Colaiuta
