Dong Work for Yuda - Vinnie's groove

Postby joecrabtree » Mon Nov 21, 2011 4:00 am

Hey guys,

I posted this on my blog a while back : http://www.joecrabtree.com/blog/2011/09/25/vinnie-colaiutas-groove-from-dong-work-for-yuda-frank-zappa/

It's a guess at what Vinnie's doing. I kind of feel like he wouldn't have been crossing his hands over so much, but that seemed like the easiest way to play it to me to fit in those odd hihat notes. It feels surprisingly nice to play once you get your head around it. Of course, after posting the video I was listening again and realised I'd missed or added stuff to even that part of the groove, but it's almost right. The groove changes from bar to bar and I was really just interested in the general frame work.

By the way, if you haven't checked out Mark Guiliana on Gently Disturbed by the Avishai Cohen Trio then do it now! It's incredible.

Best,
Joe

Thanks for sharing Joe, I really enjoy your youtube vids. I often wonder how the hell Vinnie comes up with these parts. I wonder whether there is a lot of thought put into composing his drum parts or he just listens to a tune a few times and sits down to play whatever comes out?

I'd love to know too. He has a knack of coming up with interesting grooves.

nice video joe as always! Vinnie might be sneaking some of those hi-hat notes in with his foot, he loves to do that.

I think vinnie just lets it go, given the absurd creativity he displays on the fly in virtually every live performance and clinic, it's not hard to extrapolate that to the studio setting. His improvised musicality its awe inspiring, but I believe it came from countless hours of intentional technical study.
