A cool new Jeff Watts clip, although I'll never know what he's going for with his bass drum sound...

I have to laugh (or is it cringe?) when I see people commenting on the sound of anything in YouTube videos when they have no knowledge of how it was actually recorded. I think it's pretty obvious that the video above (from San Jose) has audio that was recorded from a microphone that was somewhere near the floor since you can barely hear the mounted toms or cymbals. Not only that, but that audio was clearly not modified at all. I'm sure his drums sound just fine in person.
It's not enough that we get almost instant access to recent performances. No, we need it to be polished to a fine luster too. After all, we ARE paying for it right? Right?

That sounds like a board mix without the overheads or something. Really nice to hear the bass drum that upfront from a 'study' perspective. You can hear exactly when he buries the beater. I hate that sound when I do it myself on a open tuned kick and it is interesting to hear that even Jeff Watts gets that choked sound on loud hits. The vid has a Remo watermark but it does not suit any marketing purpose I guess. People will respond to their liking whether the performance is 'for free' or paid for. It's just the way it is. As an artist I think you could best try to keep the stuff you choose yourself to be on top of any search list. I cannot imagine that it would be possible to block the tsunami of iPhone vids with distorted crap sound etc. Mike Mangini had a powerful and emotional charged speech to the audience about how he hates to play for people who are 'not there but looking trough their little lenses '.

All the instruments sound like crap on this one, so there's a good bet that it sounded pretty good in real life.

Looks like it's shot with three go pro type cams and I bet that's what we're listening to. I think Tain's kits normally sound great. In this situation any kit's going to sound crappy. Cowbell sounds good though.
More Tain please !
