Tabla influenced drummers

Postby stephenksimmons » Wed Mar 23, 2011 3:08 pm

Hi everyone,
I am doing a school paper on tabla and would like to add a section on it's influence on drumming (out of personal interest). does anyone know of any drummers who incorporate Tabla/Indian rhythm concepts to the drum set ?

Hi Stephen,
Two individuals you might check out are Trilok Gurtu and Pete Lockett. Pete has a book that is written for drumset players looking to explore Indian rhythms. His site is full of free lessons as well.

Dan Weiss, he's a m-f'er!!!! Check out Rez Abbasi's "Things To Come," and Dave Binney's "Aliso!" Dan subbed for Smith in Summit and from what I heard, he killed it!

By the way there is a new Summit record called "Spirit and Spice," and check out "Raga Bop," for Steve's Indian inspired drum set playing (the best eaxample yet!. Also Taufig (Zakir's brother, I think) is a killin drum set player. And there was another younger Indian cat a while back, playing with McLaughlin, he sounded real good. The Indian guys don't use many stickings when they play set (it's just not in their culture, from what I was told) so it's mostly singles. And what unbelievable singles they are!

Another angle would be Zakir and all of the guys that he has influenced on the drum set. And speaking of which, when Eric Harland and Zakir play together, it sounds like Eric is really "speaking the language" as well.

I believe Megesh, or Magesh also uses tabla/drumset in his playing. I think he's from or based in Australia...has a dvd out.

There is a splendid video article by Pete Lockett on exactly this topic in the debut edition of iDrum magazine.
