It's true that supportive parents will tremendously help you get somewhere on an instrument. I've seen that many times in my teaching.

I've personnally experienced not necessarily support nor comprehensivess but I had extremely patient parents. I could play whenever and for as long as I wanted. We were 5 kids and all played music: drums, guitar, bass, sax, clarinet, keys. Sometimes all practicing at the same time in our rooms. My parents who had zero interest or talent for music never understood why the hell we all played music. But never a knock on the door to:"Stop, please!".

DSOP wrote:I disagree with that. I see pretty decent starter drum sets for under $500, including cheap cymbals. You can get even better drums used. Electronic kits start at over $500.

I' m talking about dirt cheap crap ekits:

The one the parents refer to is sold over here in record stores for ~$200. I checked it quickly once and couldn't find a brand on it.

Andy Fisenden using an electronic kit pretty effectively. I like how he had one of the sampler pads midied to change his kit for different sounds in the song. As always a great groove :)

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but i'll soon be in the market for an electronic kit and thought i might pick a few brains.

So.... Mesh heads vs Pads? I've heard great things about mesh heads....anyone got any experience with them on an e-kit?

I'm thinking about going for this at the mo> http://www.thomann.de/gb/roland_td9k2_v ... sh_set.htm

DSOP - I have been a Roland (not

Is that Oleta on vocals, with him,
on that? I liked the arrangement,
though not her performance as
much. He's an incredible vocalist,
I think.

I have played the Yamaha and
Roland E-kits for years and in the
live setting. Sure. It is not like
a real kit. The best you can do is
bring in your best pedals and sticks
and a good headset. Sound
engineers? Chances are they will
not be doing their job on the
monitors and you will hate the
sound. If you have the headset,
you will be able to live with it
and remember your role.

I really hit the things so everyone
sees me as they would on a
regular kit. I mean I even bash
them. It is about controlling the
sound, so let that be but don't
let that control control your
performance. Tune them. Make
them sound great. You have
to love it. Get a good sample
and kick ass. Don't hold back
or it will sound like it.

Btw, I hate the Roland HH's. I
hate them. Make sure you are
content with the HH's on the
kit you buy.

P

I'm a big TFF fan as well. I agree about Roland's vocal ability; powerful. I've been trying to find out who played drums on 'Elemental'. I thought they might be programmed but I'm leaning toward 'live' loops.
