TLDR use twitter and facebook to network yourself.

My steps for social networking as a drummer:

1. Be a really cool person.
2. Be generally positive, but don't be a polyanna.
3. Be active on message boards
4. Have a Facebook page
5. Don't be a cyberstalker

Do that for about three years and you will be stunned how many people you will be able to include among your acquaintances.

These are all great, but there is no substitute for making bass players and leaders happy.
