Rare Lalo Schifrin with Andy Newmark

Postby langmick » Mon Apr 30, 2012 6:36 pm

Total molecularization man, total. Alright, you know.

Carmelized molecularization.

Anyway, great loud confident playing on Lalo Schifrin's record Black Widow by Newmark, sounding super funky and real slithery, way up high in the mix. I don't care if it sounds "dated"...compared to what?

Does it need to sound slick...no, not really in my view...but it's tight and the music is played by real musicians and Andy is playing his stuff all over the place. His snare sound is perfect for the vibe.

Alright.

Thanks for posting this! Newmark never gets the credit he deserves.

A little before his time. He was born in 1950.

That TV show in particular had a lot of open space...
they are showing runs now on cable...would never
have a production like this today...long shots w/
no editing or dialogue...just music to fill the time
and it usually is snare and hats...very tasty drumming.

Lalo did the theme, but probably Joe P, Emil, or
one of the west coast guys...some suggest Shelly
Manne?

Would love to know who played in all the episodic shows
of that era. Lalo was the man...got to sit next to his daughter
at a wedding...cute.

I love they way he plays these on the cliffs fills that create tension.

I've never heard anyone play like that and give me that over any hard hitting dude who plays real fast blowing notes all over the place.

I love that description; that's why while I was listening, I was glad that Gadd or Marotta didn't get the gig.

I already posted this on Weekend Chatty a while back, but I can't resist doing it again (copied from Drummerworld):

Saxophone great Pat Rizzo approached a young drummer named Andy Newmark after a performance and invited him to audition with Sly Stone. It was an incredible opportunity - over the previous few years, Stone had inherited the funk torch from James Brown and was in the process of revolutionizing popular dance music.

According to Newmark, he ran up to Stone's house between performances and was promptly escorted into the singer's darkened bedroom. Stone was sprawled on the bed in an incoherent, presumably drug-induced haze. Several other band members stood in sinister silence around their visionary leader. Eventually, Stone's eyes focused and he rasped out a question: "Are you funky?"

Newmark said he was, and Stone simply commanded him to play. Newmark took a seat at the battered drum pads by the bed and - knowing he had 20 seconds to make an impression - let fly with the funkiest beat he could muster. Suddenly, Stone leapt from the bed and began dancing around the room. Without even asking Newmark's name, Stone instructed his brother, the guitar player, to fire the other guy - they had found a new drummer.

Newmark went on to record an album called "Fresh" with Stone, and that album forever changed the landscape of popular music by fusing jazz, funk, and soul in a combination that had never been heard before, or maybe since. Jazz legend Miles Davis was so overwhelmed by one of the album's tracks that he called his band to a rehearsal and made them listen to it repeatedly for a half hour straight.

Absolutely a must have! He is on everything but 'The Dream Weaver' which of course is Keltner.

'Avalon' is a fantastic album. He just grooves so hard and along with a drum machine at that! One of the few times he has used a five piece kit.
Most of the time it's a four piece.
I didn't realize until recently that Rick Marotta played on 'To Turn You On' and I've had that CD forever.

Even though I don't think any of the drum tracks are different, the stripped down versions on Lennon's remastered 'Double Fantasy' are really fun to listen to.
You can hear the detail in Newmark's playing and get a good sense of how he keeps things moving forward, especially in his fills with sparse, uncluttered use of ghost notes.
One thing I like that he does a lot is play the hi-hat chick on the upbeat through a fill.

He also played on Joe Walsh records, not sure exactly what he did, it sounds like him on Walk Away.

And he did the Gilmour album On and Island, and ghost drummed on The Divisin Bell. I have a boot with him on a waters tour in the 80s that has some amazing drumming, and he took some serious chances. The Final Cut also has some very Newmaek playing.

I'd say he's done some good things, sheesh!

You could listen to the things he did for a very long time.
