I think Weckl is one of the only guys who I actually become more impressed with the older I get.
The more I learn about the actual act of playing drums and how hard it actually is the more I can't get over how he has mastered his approach. He's an anomaly.

I first heard of Weckl when I went to see and hear Simon and Garfunkel in the summer of 1983 at Parade Stadium in Minneapolis. I went to see S&G and expected Gadd. Weckl was playing and he sounded great! Airto was playing percussion!
After that, i lived in record stores to see if Weckl was on any records. This was pre internet and I lived in Wisconsin near the border of St. Paul MN, so I had no information to go by.
I somehow found out Weckl played on Paquito D' Rivera's WHY NOT record, and found that LP in a shopping mall store in Minnesota I believe.
The whole record is nice, but the tune GDANSK was my favorite at the time. The great Portinho was also on about half of this record. Amazing Brazilian funk playing by Portinho there too!!!
Here's the tune GDANSK. Drum solo at the end!!!
Later, i heard Weckl was with Chick Corea, and i camped out at the record stores waiting for the first Elektric Band album to come out.
I was obsessed.
