Roy Haynes is past his prime. I saw him with Corea last Newport, and he couldn't swing and his time was terrible.

Not to me. I agree with Andrew.
It's clunky, like a square wheel rolling down a hill, and his time and swing is off many times
in this video.

I saw him not too long ago and was very disappointed as well.

Yeah...

But for positivity- Roy is one of my favorites. His impact on drumming is immense, and his style of swing (straightening it out) was so unique and hip. He was a brilliant, creative mind, no doubt. "Now He sings, Now He Sobs" - 'nough said. A must-listen-to for any cat.

If they wanted a great drum soloist, they should have gotten Joey Baron.

Drums aren't the most ideal solo instrument anyway...though they definitely CAN be great, given the right drummer.

I admit I 've never seen Roy Haynes live,(shame on me) but he sounds good to me in that vid. He really brings out the syncopation and doesn't sound like he's playing smooth jazz...

Well if it was officially recorded I am sure you would have no trouble hearing it, but I am still surprised you guys can't hear how he's not locked in at all, playing super clumsy. It was painful. Thank god McBride is a rock. Haynes was all over the place. And on the upper tempo songs, he could barely get out the spangalang.

I think it's a must-listen, but not a must-love. Haynes does all his comping on the snare. I don't know if Chick instructed him to play that way or if it was his creative choice, but it wears thin on me.

Band geeks unite: Late Show with David Letterman is kicking off its first ever “Drum Solo Week.”

The late-night staple is dedicating a week’s worth of episodes to performances by some of the music industry’s top percussionists, starting with a standout solo on Monday, June 6 from the Late Show‘s very own Anton Fig, the drummer in Paul Shaffer’s band.

The following night, Letterman welcomes Sheila E. and her world renowned skill with the sticks.

On Wednesday, June 8, drum legend Roy Haynes takes the stage, boasting a career filled with Miles Davis and Sarah Vaughn collaborations (to name a few). And rounding out the week is a performance by Rush’s Neil Peart, a drummer who is often regarded as one of rock music’s greatest.

In addition to a week filled with extra musical guests, Letterman will gab with Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights, J.J. Abrams’ Super 8), Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother, Tony Awards host), Jon Cryer (Two and a Half Men), and more TV types.

The Late Show‘s “Drum Solo Week” debuts Monday, June 6 at 11:35/10:35c on CBS.

This. I like the musicality of how his snare/bassdrum comping ties in with the piano and bass. I'll take that over mechanical perfection anyday. And if it's good enough for Chick...
