Early Donati on Sonor phonics.

Postby matthughen » Sun Feb 13, 2011 11:53 am

Pardon me if this has been posted before. Funny 80s jazzy-pop singer gig with a solo at the end.

Its Virgil with a mullet playing Sonor phonics. The Donti-isms are already well developed; the up-facing left palm, the double bass mastery, the tom/bass vinnie lick, the crossover trickery. He grooves quite nicely with this band as well.

I absolutely loved it! And yes, it does look like he was already developing into what he is now...very cool.

My wife said he looks like Charlie Sheen here; I think shes right :)

Hadn't seen this before! Cool clip!
Makes me think of Carlos Vega on "GRP Live in Session".

Here's another one - though an official music video from Southern Sons.
This one is from 1992. Not much else than straight pop/rock - but I enjoy the
bridge, which is really well written. And Jack Jones is a great singer.

Not my music, but great playing by VD. He's more versatile than I was aware of....

I uploaded that entire show on video.google in much better quality:

(For some odd reason part 1 is not available as I type this)

I dug that percussionists solo in the first vid. +1 to the Charlie Sheen comment too

With absolutely no disrespect, I couldn't disagree more. I see no similarities in groove, touch or expression. At all.

That said, Carlos played drums on Tina Arena's album "Don't Ask"...
